CVE-2018-1087

HIGH
8.0
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

kernel KVM before versions kernel 4.16, kernel 4.16-rc7, kernel 4.17-rc1, kernel 4.17-rc2 and kernel 4.17-rc3 is vulnerable to a flaw in the way the Linux kernel's KVM hypervisor handled exceptions delivered after a stack switch operation via Mov SS or Pop SS instructions. During the stack switch operation, the processor did not deliver interrupts and exceptions, rather they are delivered once the first instruction after the stack switch is executed. An unprivileged KVM guest user could use this flaw to crash the guest or, potentially, escalate their privileges in the guest.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2018-1087?

Published advisories record a fix for 51 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.

Is CVE-2018-1087 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2018-1087 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 0.77% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 54% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2018-1087?

CVE-2018-1087 has a CVSS v3 base score of 8.0, rated high. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2018-1087 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for kernel (Amazon), kernel-debuginfo (Amazon), kernel-debuginfo-common-x86_64 (Amazon), kernel-devel (Amazon), and 47 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
