CVE-2019-11479

HIGHEPSS 100th pctl
7.5
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

Jonathan Looney discovered that the Linux kernel default MSS is hard-coded to 48 bytes. This allows a remote peer to fragment TCP resend queues significantly more than if a larger MSS were enforced. A remote attacker could use this to cause a denial of service. This has been fixed in stable kernel releases 4.4.182, 4.9.182, 4.14.127, 4.19.52, 5.1.11, and is fixed in commits 967c05aee439e6e5d7d805e195b3a20ef5c433d6 and 5f3e2bf008c2221478101ee72f5cb4654b9fc363.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2019-11479?

Published advisories record a fix for 83 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.

Is CVE-2019-11479 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2019-11479 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 91.7% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 100% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2019-11479?

CVE-2019-11479 has a CVSS v3 base score of 7.5, rated high. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2019-11479 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for kernel (Amazon), kernel-debuginfo (Amazon), kernel-debuginfo-common-aarch64 (Amazon), kernel-debuginfo-common-x86_64 (Amazon), and 79 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
