CVE-2024-12086

MEDIUMEPSS 78th pctl
6.1
CVSS v3
NVD

Description

A flaw was found in rsync. It could allow a server to enumerate the contents of an arbitrary file from the client's machine. This issue occurs when files are being copied from a client to a server. During this process, the rsync server will send checksums of local data to the client to compare with in order to determine what data needs to be sent to the server. By sending specially constructed checksum values for arbitrary files, an attacker may be able to reconstruct the data of those files byte-by-byte based on the responses from the client.

Common questions

How do I fix CVE-2024-12086?

Published advisories record a fix for 18 affected products. The "How to fix" section on this page lists the fixed version and source advisory for each one, so apply the entry matching what you actually run.

Is CVE-2024-12086 being actively exploited?

Not that we know of. CVE-2024-12086 is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. Its EPSS score of 1.8% is the estimated probability that it will be exploited in the next 30 days. That is higher than 78% of all scored CVEs.

How severe is CVE-2024-12086?

CVE-2024-12086 has a CVSS v3 base score of 6.1, rated medium. CVSS rates the technical impact if the vulnerability is exploited, not how likely that is, so weigh it alongside the exploit-prediction score when you decide what to patch first.

What does CVE-2024-12086 affect?

Published advisories record a fix for rsync (Amazon), rsync-daemon (Amazon), rsync-debuginfo (Amazon), rsync-debugsource (Amazon), and 14 more. Only products with a sourced advisory are listed, so treat this as what we can cite rather than a complete inventory.
